Today I bought a Commodore 64. It was an impulse buy after reading an article about them in Wired. I remember my dad buying me one when I was still in first or second grade. I would invite the homies over and we would stare at the command prompt. None of us knew how to use the damn thing. I had seen “War Games” on TV so I amazed everyone by typing in random instructions like, “Blow up Lil’ Ed’s house” and pushing ENTER. The response, “Syntax Error,” was so ominous they all thought I was some sort of technomancer.
